WebBiomass carbon was determined using the method of Jenkinson & Powlson (1976). Incubated soils were subsampled and 30 g aliquots placed in Ehrlenmeyer flasks. These were then fumigated for 6 h with alcohol-free chloroform. After vacuum-removal of the chloroform, carbon dioxide traps containing potassium hydroxide Webmethod of Jenkinson and Powlson (1976). The microbial biomass carbon was estimated by calculating the evolved CO2-C evolved from fumigated soil minus CO2-C evolved from un-fumigated soil during 10 days incubation divided by Kc value of 0.45 (Jenkinson and Ladd, 1981). The CO2 evolved was measured by alkali absorption method.
